Become Mike's Donor

Through the National Kidney Registry, registration has commenced for live donors to help give The Gift of Life to Michael Handfield. 

 

Mike has been accepted into the Mayo Clinic Transplant Center in Phoenix, the largest integrated transplant provider in the United States and a leader in living-donor kidney transplants. 

 

The donation process is detailed yet straight forward:

• Donors must be at least 18 years old and in good physical and mental health.

• After an initial screening, potential donors have blood tests to check for compatibility.  Mike's blood type is O+ which makes him compatible with potential donors having either blood types O+ or O-.

• We're on a quest for Directed Donors, which allows potential donors with compatible blood types (those with blood types O+ or O-) to name Mike as the person to receive their donated kidney.

• While a perfect blood type match would be ideal, people with incompatible blood types (those who do NOT have blood types O+ or O-) can donate to Mike through the Paired Donation or Paired Exchange system. 

• After the blood tests, potential donors are assigned Independent Donor Advocates to represent their health, insurance and all personal interests, every single step of the way.

• From there, full medical exams and more tests are conducted until everyone feels that this is the right action to take.
